What happens if my child gets sick or hurt?
It’s one of the most common questions parents ask, and for good reason.
At Muskoka Woods, your child isn’t just supervised. They’re supported by a full Health Care Centre designed to respond quickly, care thoroughly, and keep you informed.
If something happens, your child is already in the right place.
Not all camp health care is the same
Our Health Care Centre functions more like a small medical clinic than a traditional camp infirmary.

Led by a team you can trust
Meet Lori McAuley, Medical Director
Lori has led the Muskoka Woods Health Care Centre since 2010, bringing decades of nursing experience including work with SickKids and Toronto Public Health.
But what makes Lori unique isn’t just her medical background—it’s her lifelong connection to Muskoka Woods.
She first came to camp in 1979 and has been part of it ever since.
That combination of professional expertise and deep personal investment shapes how care is delivered every single week. It’s not just about treating symptoms, it’s about caring for each child in a place she knows and believes in.
“Our goal is simple: when a child needs care, they receive it quickly, thoughtfully, and in a way that helps them return to their week with confidence.”
– Lori McAuley, RN, BScN, HCC Director

The questions parents really care about
What kind of medical care is available at Muskoka Woods?
Muskoka Woods operates a full Health Care Centre staffed by a team of 10–12 medical professionals each week, including nurses, a physician, and healthcare students.
Guests are assessed throughout the day, with multiple clinic times available, and our doctor is involved whenever needed. Care is available 24/7.
This allows us to provide support that goes far beyond basic first aid, handling most medical needs right on-site so your child can continue their week safely.
What happens if my child gets sick while at camp?
If your child isn’t feeling well, they will be assessed by our Health Care team right away.
Our nurses determine the next steps, which may include rest, monitoring, treatment, or involving our on-site physician. Most concerns are handled directly at camp so your child can recover and return to activities as soon as possible.
If additional care is needed, we’ll guide you through what’s happening and what to expect.
Will I be contacted if something happens to my child?
Yes. Parents are contacted for meaningful health concerns.
This includes hospital visits, illnesses or injuries that affect participation, and any time medication is prescribed.
For younger campers especially, communication is more proactive so you’re always aware of what’s happening.

Additional ways we keep guests safe
Beyond our Health Care Centre, we take a proactive approach to health, safety, and prevention across the entire camp experience.
While most of a child’s care happens through our Health Care Centre, these additional measures help prevent issues before they arise.

Air Quality, Ventilation & Filtration
We actively monitor air quality conditions each day in consultation with public health guidance.
- Daily review of Air Quality Health Index (AQHI)
- Adjusted activity plans when needed
- HEPA filtration systems in cabins
- Air conditioning to support indoor air quality
When air quality is impacted, we modify programming to reduce strain, increase indoor time, and support guests who may be more sensitive.

Hand Hygiene
Good hygiene is a simple but important part of keeping everyone healthy.
- Hand sanitizer stations located throughout camp
- Hand washing stations in key areas
- Staff trained on proper hygiene practices
- Regular reminders for guests and staff

Staff Training
Our team is trained to support both prevention and response.
- Proper hygiene and sanitation practices
- Alignment with current public health guidance
- Cleaning and disinfecting protocols
- Safe use of protective equipment

Bed Bug Prevention
We take proactive steps to maintain a clean and comfortable environment.
- Regular inspection processes
- Preventative monitoring tools
- Immediate response protocols if needed
While bed bugs are a broader travel industry issue, our team works diligently to prevent and address any concerns quickly.
