Updated Cell Phone Guidelines

After speaking with some of our loyal families, and actively listening to our parent survey feedback, we have revisited and revised our cell phone guidelines.

Summer camp is a transformative experience, giving kids the opportunity to have fun, grow in confidence and leave inspired to shape their world. Kayaking on beautiful Lake Rosseau, cheering on a friend when they get up on water skis for the first time, or working together as a cabin to win an evening program are all best enjoyed live and in-person. For some youth, technology can be a barrier to reaching their true potential, discovering the beauty of nature, forming meaningful relationships, and getting the most out of their time at Muskoka Woods. Our desire is for our guests to be fully immersed in all that camp has to offer, rather than experiencing it from behind their phone.

We continue to strongly recommend all communication devices stay at home. If your family reaches a decision that your child will come to Muskoka Woods with a device, here are our updated cell phone guidelines:

If you are a parent of a WILD (6-8) or Venture (9-10) guest:

  • Please notify your child’s counsellor upon arrival if you have chosen to send your child to camp with a cell phone. Guests will be able to text/call home after dinner time (5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.) and before evening program to avoid homesickness before bedtime. If you would like to contact your child while they are at camp, please do so during these times
  • The cell phone will be required to stay in your child’s bag in their cabin during daily activities and evening program.
  • We encourage you to bring a lock for your luggage if you are bringing technology to camp.

If you are a parent of a Junior High (11-13), Senior High (14-16) or CEO (15-17) guest:

  • They are to refrain from using their phones while at their activities (9 a.m. - 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. - 5 p.m.) and during evening program (7 p.m. - 10 p.m.).
  • Your child will be allowed to use their cell phone during downtime, including meal times and after evening program. If you would like to contact your child while they are at camp, please do so during these times.
  • Cell phones are to be put away at curfew, which is 10:30 p.m. for Junior High guests and 11 p.m. for Senior High and CEO guests.
  • We encourage you to bring a lock for your luggage if you are bringing technology to camp.

All staff on property will model this behaviour to our guests and have committed to not use their cell phones during these same time slots, unless there is an emergency. Our staff will actively encourage guests to put their phones away. If a guest repetitively is using their device when phones are meant to be away, we will talk to the guest individually.

We also want to remind you about our helpful email service. While your child is at camp, you and approved family and friends, can send one-way emails to keep in touch. You can log-in to your Muskoka Woods account, go to “View Registrations”, click on the week your child is attending, then “Send Emails”. Click “Manage Guests” from your login dashboard to invite family and friends to email your child. Emails will be printed and distributed to your child daily.

We encourage you to sit down and discuss these cell phone guidelines with your child, in order to make the best decision for your family and prepare them for camp.
